“From owning and running one of Sydney’s iconic fabric stores, Catherine has turned her patchwork obsession into becoming one of the new talked about tutors.”

Born and raised in the state of Ohio in the USA, Catherine has always had a love of stitching. After moving to Sydney, Australia she studied at the School of Fashion and the Sydney Teacher’s College where she obtained her teaching certificate. Catherine then joined her husband as the second generation to own and run The Fabric Shop, an iconic retail ladies’ dress fabric store that was located in Chatswood on Sydney’s north shore. During these years Catherine’s time and energy were directed at running a business and raising a family of five children. Her creative outlet during those years were dressmaking and tailoring, something she continues to enjoy to this day.

Since retirement Catherine’s creative outlet has shifted to quiltmaking. Influenced by her American roots Catherine gravitates towards traditional quilt blocks which have stood the test of time. Her work encompasses the traditional, contemporary and modern genres where she is known for her use of colour, stunning fabric choices, signature fussy cutting, precise machine piecing, surface embellishments, and an overall attention to detail.

Catherine’s original quilt designs have won numerous prestigious quilt awards both in Australia and in the USA including the BERNINA Best of Australia Award for 2019. Although Catherine is proud of her achievements in quilt competitions, the quilts dearest to her heart are the ones she has gifted to family and friends where she has stitched memories into cloth knowing that every time the quilt is used the recipient will think of her and the special bond they share.

Catherine is compelled to create and she loves working with textiles. It is no wonder that quiltmaking has become such a good fit for her.
